Other Characters: NOONE
Name: Asagi
From: Disgaea is the easy answer (all of Nippon Ichi's games are in the same universe and Asagi doesn’t stick to just one game, so either Disgaea or the NISverse will work)
Appearance: Bam
Age: 17
Gender: Female
Personality: Asagi’s most noteworthy positive trait is her incredible determination. For years, she’s been told that she’ll one day become the main character of her own game and become famous for it…unfortunately for her, that was approximately seven years ago. So what has she done in all of that time? Simply put, she’s been making cameos in almost every single game released by Nippon Ichi ever since her first appearance in Makai Kingdom (US release date 2005). In these cameos, she reminds the protagonist and the players of how her role as main character is constantly dangled out of her reach, but even after all of this time, she continues to hold strong to her will and her vow to never give up and to fight until her game finally gets released.
Following this up is Asagi’s most noteworthy negative trait: her reckless abandon. She was once a cute and timid young girl, but after forced apprenticeship under Overlord Zetta, she became one of the cockiest and most destructive of Nippon Ichi’s characters. Sure it made her much more powerful, but it made her ego grow to match in size. Thanks to this, she’s convinced herself that if she were to ever one day defeat a game’s main character, she could take the title for herself and push her game that much closer to a release date. However, this has often lead to some very…disastrous results. The worst example was when the game’s protagonist chose to ignore her, she not only killed the final boss in one attack, she also destroyed the world just to keep his attention on her and provoke a fight. She lost, of course, which meant that the protagonist had to start the game all over again.
As is sometimes the case in those with huge egos, the layer underneath is something much more sensitive and weaker. For Asagi, this is her intense insecurity. Each defeat is followed by a very melodramatic speech about incompetency and how she’ll forever remain a side character, saying she’ll “grow old and gray and die” before she ever becomes a true main character. Her insecurities are only made worse by the fact that Nippon Ichi’s developers purposely deny her game’s release since so many find it amusing to watch Asagi struggle for it to happen…and she’s completely aware of this fact. At the very least, it justifies her constant desire to do better and keep up the fight until she wins. Does it justify blowing up worlds or harassing main characters? No, but she’ll do it anyway in her one-woman crusade to have her game released.
Like all of Nippon Ichi’s characters, Asagi is very much aware of the fourth wall and can refer to it casually in conversation. Unlike the other characters, she smashes it harsher and more often, her primary offenses include actually meeting the developers at Nippon Ichi and being able to hack into her own stats to make herself level 9999 (the highest level the game allows). This translates into her personality by demonstrating her lack of respect for boundaries; her insecurities make her feel like she’s trapped in a vicious cycle of cameo hell, so she’ll do just about anything she possibly can to break away from her restraints and do what she really wants to do.
But as mentioned before with her reckless abandon, this will oftentimes mean putting others at risk at first, she really won’t care. As such, she can sometimes be seen as unlikeable or too self-centered for her own good, but honestly…she is. Spending seven years chasing down a promise means most of the time, she doesn’t stop to catch her breath and appreciate what she already has: more appearances than almost any other character, more popularity than almost any other character and more importantly, respect. Others have noted how harshly she gets beaten down sometimes (especially when getting one-hit killed with an attack that does 2 billion damage), but even with times at their worst and the entire world against her, she’ll still stand back up and fight for what she believes in, gaining a bit more wisdom each time. So could she make friends with others? Probably. They just have to keep her in line and kick her ass when needed.
Backstory: For clarification, the Nippon Ichi universe is full of characters who are entirely aware of the 4th wall and the fact that they’re fictional characters.
It all began when Nippon Ichi (the creators of the Disgaea series) started work on a game called Makai Wars, a game they had planned to release after Makai Kingdom. The protagonist was to be a spunky teenage girl named Asagi, who, like many of Nippon Ichi’s (which will be shortened to NIS) characters, came to life after many character design drafts. She was cute, had a catchphrase, had unrivaled skills with guns and was told from creation that she would become the protagonist of her own game. She was entirely prepared for Makai Wars...
...what she wasn’t prepared for, however, was a meeting with Makai Kingdom’s protagonist, Overlord Zetta. It was supposed to be a cameo appearance to tease the fans (though the developers weren't planning on releasing it anyway), but Zetta grew concerned that the next game would be a serious drama. Unhappy with this, he did battle with Asagi and kicked her ass by literally dropping a hut on her. Upon her defeat, the game was delayed (sort of) and he scoffed at Asagi’s weakness. He decided to take her on as an apprentice and shape her into a proper protagonist…which really meant making her more like him and thus, letting him shape the next game however he liked. Since Asagi was still new to things, she didn’t have much of a choice other than to accept.
Zetta’s training was harsh and strict, but it was what had to be done. Makai Wars was delayed after Asagi’s defeat, so the next phase of her training involved cursing her to stay in another dimension until she proved to Zetta that she became stronger. This dimension was in the game that followed Makai Kingdom, Disgaea 2. Here, she met the game’s protagonist and love interest, Adell and Rozalin. Asagi informed them of her situation and they decided to engage her in battle to prove her strength to Zetta. But she lost. Although this meant she would have to stay trapped in this dimension a little longer, Rozalin taught her that she’ll be able to go back home as long as she keeps fighting and never gives up. That lesson would become Asagi’s driving force for the rest of her career. Here, she decided to hang around with Adell until she indeed became strong enough to set out on her own.
She made her next appearance in a game called Soul Nomad. By this point, it’s apparent that Asagi has become much stronger and, like Zetta, much more arrogant and cocky. She demonstrates her strength to the game’s protagonists by killing the final boss in one attack and destroying the entire world, boasting that it’s just one tenth of her full power…but of course, she loses anyway, so she gets stuck with the main character for a bit since her destroying the world meant they had to start the story all over again.
It was a crushing defeat for her, but to make up for it, she actually received a copy of Makai Wars…but almost immediately had it stolen from her. Holding her game in her hands only to have it taken away brought her down to reality as she became more somber and almost lost by the time she met Disgaea 3’s cast. She’s quick to blame the game’s protagonist, Mao, and attacks him. Unsurprisingly, she lost. She enters pure depression upon her defeat and bursts into tears. Due to pressure from his comrades, Mao ends up recruiting Asagi, blaming a legendary overlord for the disappearance of her game. The overlord has been going around stealing other things, so it was the best answer he could come up with to get the blame off of himself. Here, she realized that things aren’t so bad since she’s appeared in a lot of games, but she still needs her own if she wants to be happy.
She makes a few cameos in Zettai Hero Project and the PSP version of Phantom Brave, but they don’t show much except for her knowledge of Dengeki Bunko anime and the existence of other Asagis. She made a much more grandiose appearance in Disgaea 4, where she encountered Lord Valvatorez and once again tried to steal the role of main character. Unfortunately, the developers never told her she should upgrade to HD sprites for the game, so after the confusion from differing technologies, the party agreed to give her the role of main character out of pity. However, she disagreed and told the others she wanted to earn the position and thus, challenged Valvatorez for the title in which, once again, she lost. This time, she reveals that she’s jealous of the other characters for at least having a place they could call home and prepares to take her leave, but Valvatorez takes her in as a member of the party to give her such a place.
In one more show of her willpower, another Asagi makes an appearance, this time upgraded to HD graphics. She tried to take Valvatorez’s title again and lost…again. This new Asagi joined the party and once again, demonstrated her determination in getting Makai Wars the release she feels it deserves.
Moral Standing: She started off as the good guy, but years of chasing her dream has drifted her closer and closer to being neutral. She’s probably more chaotic good than anything; she causes a lot of trouble, yes, but it’s all for the sake of earning her place as protagonist of her own game.
Dreams: More than anything else in the multiverse, Asagi wants her game, Makai Wars, to be released so she can rightfully become its main character. It’s something she’s been working at for seven years (ever since Makai Kingdom came out) and all she has to show for it are countless cameos in games meant for everyone except her.
Fears: Related to her dream, her greatest fear is Makai Wars staying in development hell forever, leaving Asagi to stay a side character for the rest of her life while being stuck as NIS’s running joke.
Extra: I think the rest of the app covers it nicely. She’s pretty destructive and has a very high tendency to fourth wall other characters whether or not they expect it. This is because she’s very genre-savvy and enjoys reading her manga/playing her games/watching her anime. In short, she’s an otaku.
Character Location: Since Asagi doesn’t have a place she can call her own, the only location that has constantly stayed with her is her warship, Yoshitsuna, which she’s only seen using to fire its destructive laser cannon to either destroy worlds or autograph her name on them. Headcanon says she uses it to travel around the multiverse and can comfortably live in it.
Samples: I’ve linked to videos of her appearances in her backstory, so for this, you can have her wiki page. You’re welcome.
